The Evolution of the Honda Civic

Evolution of the Honda Civic

From a tiny family car to a full-on sports car, the Honda Civic has come a long way since its 1973 arrival in the United States. The 1973 Civic shares little resemblance to its 2021 counterpart, but from the beginning the Civic remains a true industry gamechanger.

1st Generation 1973-79

Honda Civic 1st Generation

The one that started it all, the diminutive, first-generation Honda Civic made a big splash in the years following the 1970s energy crisis due to its high gas mileage and overall quality.

2nd Generation 1980-83

Honda Civic 2nd Generation

Why mess with perfection? The second-generation Civic shared many similarities with its predecessor, although featured a slightly smaller body and under-the-hood mechanical changes, including a third valve per cylinder that boosted engine efficiency and power output.

3rd Generation 1984-87

Honda Civic 3rd Generation

Available in hatch, sedan, and wagon body styles, the biggest change to the third-generation Civic saw the introduction of a 1.6-liter engine producing 128hp and badged "si".

4th Generation 1988-91

Honda Civic 4th Generation

The fourth-generation Civic saw perhaps the greatest visual change, moving away from the previous trend of sharp straight line styling and instead toward a softer, more polished shape. Under the hood, important mechanical changes included a new fuel-injected engine.

5th Generation 1992-95

Honda Civic 5th Generation

The fifth-generation Civic brought about more rounded styling, a physical increase in size, and the continued adoption of the VTEC system.

6th Generation 1996-2000

Honda Civic 6th Generation

1997 marked the first time the high-performance Type R arrived on the scene, featuring an impressive 182bhp from the 1.6-liter engine, Type R badges, front and rear lip, wing, and fitted Recaro bucket seats and matching Momo steering wheel.

7th Generation 2001-05

Honda Civic 7th Generation

The seventh-generation marked Civic’s move from a subcompact to a compact model, along with the addition of a hybrid model.

8th Generation 2006-11

Honda Civic 8th Generation

The eight-generation Civic brought about the most dramatic exterior changes to date by showing off a futuristic and funky styling, including a short hood, expansive windshield, and more traditional profile.

9th Generation 2012-15

Honda Civic 9th Generation

The ninth-generation Civic built upon the last iteration, making small tweaks such as a longer hood, sculpted bumper, and larger taillamps, along with the introduction of Honda’s Eco Assist fuel efficiency information system.

10th Generation 2016 Onward

Honda Civic 10th Generation

From its modest beginnings as a subcompact family car to the current model, the Civic has changed dramatically in its nearly 50 year history. More muscular and sportier than past models, the all-new tenth generation Civic launched as a four-door sedan but was quickly joined by two-door coupe and four-door hatchback versions, all of which drive with an enthusiasm and sharpness unmatched in the industry.

What to Look for When Buying a Used Car

Used Car Buying Tips near Rochester

Looking to find your perfect used car to drive around Rochester? Look no further than Victory Honda of Ontario with our below tips that can help you get behind the wheel of your next ride. So that you can buy confidently with peace of mind, here are a few things to look for when buying a used or certified pre-owned vehicle.

Used Car Buying Tips

Inspect Car Exterior and Interior
While the more photos the better on a vehicle listing, it’s always best to go see your potential new (to you) car in person. Thoroughly look over the entire vehicle, checking for any large dings, scrapes or scratches. Just a few things to think about while you are inspecting the vehicle include:

  • Are there any rusty spots or paint chips?
  • Does the heat and A/C work properly?
  • Are there any leaks under the car?
  • Is there anything hanging form the undercarriage?

Test Drive
No amount of photos, videos, or even in-person inspections can replace the good, old-fashioned test drive. Take your prospective vehicle for a quick spin, paying close attention to brake/engine noises as you drive on different road surfaces. A vehicle that pulls to the left or right may indicate poor alignment. Put the car through a variety of tests, including both city and highway driving, and parallel parking if possible.
Check the Mileage
One major factor that separates a new car from a used one is mileage. Some high mileage cars may be in better shape than low mileage cars, depending on a variety of factors. But typically, a low mileage car is the way to go as they usually require less maintenance and will have a higher resale value in the long run. However, a low mileage car that is an older model year may not be ideal. When it comes to mileage on a used car, there’s no simple formula since the way the vehicle was maintained and driven may be just as important as the odometer reading.
Review the Vehicle History Report
The more information you have about a used car, the better, and you’ll be hard pressed to find a better source of information than a Carfax report, which can quickly tell you a car’s service history, any previous accidents, and ownership history. We proudly offer a few Carfax report on all our used vehicles. Simply click the Carfax icon on any of our used vehicles pages.

Carfax Vehicle History Report

Consider Certified
Want even more assurance before you buy a used car? Then consider certified pre-owned vehicles (CPO), which are top-notch, inspected, pre-owned vehicles backed by manufacturer limited warranties that have usually been reconditioned as well. Reconditioning can include brake repair/replacement, headlight restoration, paint repair, fixing dents/dings, tire balancing, fluid exchanges, and so on. CPO vehicles also have to meet certain manufacturer guidelines, which can include passing thorough inspections, having fewer than 80,000 miles, and being 6 model years or newer.
Car Doc Peace of Mind
Did you know that all our used cars include a 90-Day/3,000-Mile Warranty and 2 Years of Complimentary Oil Changes and Tire Rotations? And for even more peace of mind, consider joining our Car Doc program for as low as $25/mo, which can save you thousands on maintenance services over the life of your vehicle and potentially increase the residual value or resale value of your car. Learn more about our exclusive Car Doc Maintenance and Membership Program by clicking here.

Summer Driving Tips

Summer’s here, which means summer road trips are in full swing from coast-to-coast. But before you load up the family SUV, minivan, car, or truck, be sure to read these quick and easy summer driving tips to spare you from dealing with the consequences of a breakdown later.

Get Your Car Serviced

Regular vehicle maintenance can help prevent any major breakdowns or issues down the road, which is the last thing anyone wants, especially on those long road trips far from home. Adhering to your car's maintenance schedule is the best way to keep your car on the road and service costs down. Been a long time since your last oil change or tune-up? Schedule a preventive maintenance checkup and we’ll make sure your car is ready for anything this summer.

Check for Recalls

It’s always a good idea to check and see if there are any outstanding safety recalls for your vehicles, especially before that long summer road trip. And it’s easy to do – search for any open recalls here: NHTSA.gov/Recalls. And if you do have any recalls, please schedule a recall work service appointment and we’ll get you back on the road in no time.

A/C Check

A poor performing air conditioning system isn’t a big deal in December, but it can make for a very uncomfortable summer of driving. Not only that, but lack of A/C can affect people who are in poor health or who are sensitive to heat, such as children and older adults. So be sure to get your A/C checked out if it feels like it's not blowing cold air.

Tire Safety

Your tires are the only part of your car that makes contact with the road, so it's important that they're all functioning properly. Make sure each tire is filled to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended inflation pressure, which is located on a placard located on the driver’s side door frame. Also be sure to check your tires’ tread as uneven wear or insufficient tread can create unsafe driving conditions, especially in inclement weather. If it’s time to replace one or more of your tires, please schedule a service appointment at your earliest convenience.

Keep the Kids and Animals Safe

While it’s tempting to leave children or pets in the car while to run inside a store for a quick errand, it’s not a great idea especially in the warmer summer months. Vehicles can quickly heat up to deadly levels in just a few minutes, even with the windows rolled down, causing heatstroke or worse, so be sure to not leave baby or Buster in the backseat.

Need more on summer driving tips? Schedule summer auto service today where our factory-trained technicians who know your car best will make sure your vehicle is summer-ready with a free multi-point inspection.

Recently purchased a new Honda Civic? You may just have an Easter egg waiting to be discovered in your new car’s interior, hiding in plain sight.

Honda Civic easter egg near Canandaigua NY

Despite its reputation as a top-tier automotive manufacturer, Honda has a motorsport-rich heritage and it pays tribute to this history in the place you would least likely expect – the center console mat.

Reach inside your center console, pull out that small piece of rubber at the bottom, turn it over, and take a look. On 10th generation Honda Civics, you'll find a small nod to Honda’s motoring success in the form of retro racers, motorcycles, planes, and tech.

New Honda Civic For Sale near Rochester

There are reportedly as many as five different mats out there, each one inscribed with “The Power of Dreams” and depicting various Honda motorcycles, race cars, and even Honda's ASIMO robot.

Next time you get behind the wheel of your new Civic, cross your fingers and check your center console mat and hopefully a little piece of Honda’s storied history will be right under your fingertips.

Winter Driving Dangers and Tips

Winter driving tips near Canandaigua NY

Winter isn’t coming, it’s already here! And with winter comes the dangers of driving in snowy, icy, and other adverse situations. Before you hit the road to Rochester or Syracuse, it’s best to prepare for the dangers of driving in the snow.

Winter snow driving tips near Canandaigua NY

Dangers of Winter Driving

Ice: Even if it’s not freezing cold outside, ice, especially black ice, makes for dangerous driving conditions since it’s difficult to see until it’s too late and causes a loss of traction, making it tough to steer and stop.

Rust: While salt is helpful and effective in keeping the roads free of dangerous ice, it is also very corrosive, meaning it can lead to paint and rust damage if left unattended. Getting regular car washes throughout winter is a good solution to protecting your car’s exterior.

Electrical System: A car’s operating efficiency is challenged by cold, winter conditions, so it’s important to have the battery, ignition system, and lights all regularly inspected to ensure proper functionality.

Limited Visibility: Winter brings with it less hours of sunlight, gray skies, and snow, of all which negatively impact your visibility while driving and putting you in a more dangerous driving situation.

Winter Driving Tips

What are some of the best ways for driving in the snow? Here are our top winter driving tips:

Safety Kit: Having a just-in-case safety kit in your car’s trunk could be life saving if an emergency should develop. Such items could include a small snow shovel, flashlight, gloves, ice scraper, and blanket.

New Wiper Blades: If your windshield has been streaky lately, consider OEM wiper blades that are designed to retain optimal visibility, especially in adverse conditions.

Winter Tires: The traction between your tires and the road determines how well your vehicle is able to accelerate, turn, and most importantly, stop. Winter/snow tires are designed to give you the best traction possible when driving in winter conditions, such as ice and snow.

Brakes: Speaking of being able to stop in winter conditions, inspecting your brakes is critical as they are responsible for actually stopping your vehicle. When driving in winter conditions, be sure to keep steady pressure on the brake pedal and to not brake suddenly.

Redesigned 2020 Honda CR-V gets new Hybrid-Electric Version

American's Best Selling Crossover gets a fresh new style in Canandaigua NY

Now available in Canandaigua is the reliable, fuel-efficient, and fun-to-drive, redesigned 2020 Honda CR-V, featuring refreshed styling, innovative qualities, and advanced powertrains, with a forthcoming CR-V Hybrid launching in early 2020.

2020 Honda CR-V For Sale near Rochester}

The 2020 CR-V Hybrid will be first electrified SUV from Honda in the U.S, joining the Accord Hybrid and Insight as other electrified Hondas built in the U.S. America’s best-selling crossover for the past 22 years benefits not only from the new hybrid-electric model, but also sees major upgrades such as a bolder front and rear styling, redesigned wheels, and standard Honda Sensing safety and driver-assistive technology. All models (non-hybrid) are now powered by a standard 1.5 liter turbo engine, formerly available only in EX and above trims.

"The Honda CR-V is the best-selling CUV over the past two decades and the updates we've made to the 2020 model, including a new hybrid-electric variant, solidify its position as a leader in the compact SUV market," said Henio Arcangeli, Jr., senior V.P. of Automobile Sales at American Honda Motor Co. "The CR-V Hybrid also signifies our direction to bring Honda hybrid-electric technology to all core models and to invest in the production of electrified vehicles in America."

Advanced Powertrains

Powered by an advanced two-motor hybrid powertrain, the 2020 CR-V Hybrid combines two electric motors and operates without needing a typical automatic transmission for smooth and seamless power delivery similar to a pure electric vehicle, and also enjoys a wide range of electric-only operation.

Because the hybrid battery pack and its control systems are housed under the cargo floor, the CR-V Hybrid maintains stellar cargo utility, including a 60/40 split rear seatback with a flat load floor. All-wheel drive is available for the CR-V Hybrid, a first for Honda's two-motor hybrid system in the U.S, which activates an electronic clutch when available traction is low and transmits the appropriate level of power from the electric motor to the rear wheels. Total system horsepower reaches a peak of 212 (up from 190 HP on the non-Hybrid CR-V), along with an expected 50% increase in the EPA city fuel economy rating compared to the CR-V.

For non-hybrid CR-V models, all trims are powered by the efficient 1.5-liter VTEC Turbo engine, rated at 190 horsepower, and include available front- or all-wheel drive configurations.

Sophisticated Interior and Exterior Styling

The 2020 CR-V continues Honda’s legacy of first-class interior space and exterior styling. A more upscale and rigorous exterior features a more aggressive look in front with a more pronounced chrome grill, including round LED fog lights, with the Hybrid model getting hybrid badging, a distinctive blue Honda logo in the center of the grille, and distinctive bar-type fog lights with five LEDs.

In the rear, new features include dark-tinted taillights, dark chrome treatment for the garnish below the rear glass, and 18-inch wheels with a dark gray and machined finish. The CR-V Hybrid Touring trims receive hybrid badges on the hatch, a unique rear bumper, and a hidden tailpipe. Three new exterior colors are available for the 2020 model: Sonic Gray Pearl and Radiant Red Metallic and new Aegean Blue Metallic.

On the inside, the CR-V Hybrid stands out from non-hybrid models with its unique interior trim, featuring the new push-button gear selector flanked by three switches for Econ, Sport, or EV mode, which allows CR-V Hybrid to operate under electric-only power. Also unique to the Hybrid model is the instrument panel, featuring a display for power/charge status, as well as a driver-selectable display for power distribution and regeneration.

Additional in-vehicle technology includes:

  • Color TFT driver-information interface center meter display
  • Available 7-inch touchscreen Display Audio interface with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration
  • Available Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation System
  • Available remote engine start
  • Available dual-zone climate control, and more.

Advanced Safety and Driver-Assistive Technology

All 2020 Honda CR-Vs now come standard with the Honda Sensing suite of advanced safety and driver-assistive technologies, including:

  • Collision Mitigation Braking System with Forward Collision Warning and pedestrian sensing capability
  • Road Departure Mitigation with Lane Departure Warning
  • Adaptive Cruise Control with low-speed follow
  • Lane Keeping Assist

Added driver-assistive technologies include available blind spot information, Rear Cross Traffic Monitor, and Auto High Beam headlights, with CR-V Hybrid models benefiting from the ingenious new Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, meant to increase awareness by pedestrians when travelling under electric-only power.
